Meet & Match: Visegrad at FIPADOC Documentary Festival

The Meet & Match: Visegrad project focused on the representation of documentary films and the visibility of creative output from V4 countries at Western European festivals. During FIPADOC, a prestigious week-long documentary film festival in France, it created a specialized platform for filmmakers from V4 countries.

The project brought together producers, directors, broadcasters, and festival representatives from V4 countries, France, and other parts of Europe to expand professional networks and explore co-production opportunities. By facilitating structured meetings, informal exchanges, and industry events, it strengthened the visibility and integration of V4 documentary cinema within the wider European industry, highlighting both the creative diversity and the professional potential of the region’s filmmakers.

In its 2025 edition, Meet & Match: Visegrad delivered a comprehensive program designed to support filmmakers at different stages of their careers. Selected V4 documentaries were showcased through screenings open to both professional audiences and the general public, providing filmmakers with critical exposure while engaging wider audiences with the region’s stories and perspectives. Early-stage projects were presented in the pitching forum, where participants received constructive feedback from international juries.

Complementing these activities, the “Panorama of the French Industry” conference offered practical guidance on production and financing strategies in France, highlighting notable examples of international co-productions, such as highly successful Hungarian documentary Kix, illustrating how the project had previously pitched at FIPADOC and secured funding from Arte France and CNC. The case studies provided participants with concrete insights into navigating funding structures, building partnerships, and developing projects for international audiences.

Targeted matchmaking sessions enabled one-to-one meetings between V4 and French producers, creating opportunities for collaboration, co-productions, and funding. Networking events further expanded professional connections between V4 filmmakers and their European counterparts, encouraging long-term partnerships. In 2025, with the festival’s Focus Territory highlighting the Balkans, these events offered V4 participants a unique chance to connect with colleagues from the region, enhancing cross-regional collaboration.

Since 2021, when the Visegrad countries were first featured as FIPADOC’s Focus Territory, the project had played a vital role in maintaining and strengthening the V4 presence at the festival. Through support for film screenings, pitching sessions, and industry events, it consistently enabled V4 professionals to engage with the European documentary ecosystem. As Visegrad Matchmaker Zdeněk Blaha noted: “The collaboration offered tangible value to the Visegrad professionals and strengthened connections between our regional documentary industries and the broader European landscape.”
