Presentation, Seminar/workshop • Lesnica
Workshop
The workshops will be conducted by both project partners individually on the Polish and Slovak side. Each workshop will be divided into two parts. The first part will focus on the presentation of the harmfulness of nitrogen compounds in food and their influence on the environment (eutrophication of water and soil pollution) as well as the impact of agricultural practices (using mineral fertilizers, inadequate crop rotation or agricultural treatments) on the content of nitrogen compounds in the agricultural products. The second part will be practical in which students will independently analyze the content of nitrates and nitrites in selected vegetables (i.e. in carrots, potatoes, lettuce and cucumber) using indicator strips and an electronic gauge. The students will have at their disposal vegetables from conventional and ecological cultivations. The first task for children will be to prepare samples for analysis, by grinding (on a grater or in a mortar) the right amount of vegetables. The sample prepared in this way will be weighted and diluted with distilled water to create a solution in which indicator strips will be immersed. After a while, the nitrates and nitrites concentration form the strips will be read. During the workshops, a table with results will be created in order to compare the content of nitrogen compounds in individual vegetables. At the end, the operation of an electronic nitrate gauge will be presented where the raw vegetable is punctured by the probe of gauge and the result is shown on the display after a few seconds. The practical part will be completed with result analysis and short discussion. An alternative solution is to conduct online workshops.
