Discussion: Curating as a Political Act

A new format promoting and supporting international collaboration between festivals that take up political connections, make social actors visible and create a public sphere for the challenges of our times. Using short film as an aesthetic medium that makes its own cultural and socio-political contribution not only initiates processes of observation, but also offers the possibility of sensual perception and empathy. The interface between short film and politics becomes especially clear when looking at a number of short film festivals that are under activist auspices. This raises the question of the role of short film festivals in an activist context and thus of the relationship between aesthetics and politics. The panel intends to create a platform on which curators and representatives of short film festivals, that are distinguished by their political commitment, discuss the relationship between festival operations and activism as well as the conditions under which curating a short film programme is understood as a political act. After all, the international networking of the industry is important in order to jointly formulate political concerns in a way that is effective for the public. The idea is to establish a solid international community which uses short film as a means to express the political and creates new spaces in which this can be done creatively. https://www.filmfest-dresden.de/en/professionals/visegrad-forum
